Former dj & keyboardist (McGregor Grill, Cyberchime) I almost explicitly use free and open source software to create music. My DAW of choice currently is Ardour 7.0 (still in beta at the time of this writing). My controller is still my Novation X-Station that I played when I was in Cyberchime (see https://www.youtube.com/user/djmadbastard/featured ), although I don't use the synth section of my keyboard much any more since the free plugins I use sound far better than trying to record the X-Station through noisy audio cables.
