In 1992, Colorado became the testing ground for a nationwide strategy to roll back the rights of gay people. Once the state’s Amendment 2 passed, evangelical groups brought their winning playbook across the country. Coloradans fought back and cultivated an LGBTQ+ haven — which is now facing the same conservative tactics, this time targeting transgender people. This is a story about Colorado. But it’s also a story about Florida. And Texas. And Tennessee. And maybe wherever you are right now. Because the Hate State strategy developed in Colorado spread everywhere. And there’s always another election around the corner.
